"Shank's Mare" is an old Scottish saying that means "to travel by foot." Since this part of Pennsylvania was settled by rough-and-tumble Scots-Irish, it's a fitting tribute to Pennsylvania's early pioneers who undoubtedly shopped in this former 1890's general store along the banks of the Susquehanna River.
Times have changed since the early days and so has Shank's Mare which outfits today's rugged, outdoor enthusiasts with equipment, clothing, and instruction for their adventures. Shank's Mare features all you'll need for backpacking and hiking, camping, kayaking, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. You can also participate in one of Shank's Mare's great outdoor programs on the Susquehanna including touring kayak lessons, day tours, weekend trips, evening and sunrise paddles all complete with equipment and meals too! Shank's Mare even features a gallery house that offers giftware and art that allow the outdoor lover to bring nature indoors.
If you're not an outdoor adventurer, you can still enjoy a snack or hand-scooped ice cream cone and soak in the view of the Susquehanna River from the store's 100-foot porch. Come visit us and GO PLAY OUTSIDE!
