Go to many major museums across the country, and you have a good chance of seeing a painting by Charles Demuth (1883-1935). Come to the Demuth Museum in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and you are guaranteed an intimate, rotating view of our permanent collection, which consists of 35 Charles Demuth originals, as well as the opportunity to experience the environment in which Demuth created his more than 1,000 watercolors, drawings and architectural oils. Stand in his studio and look out at the antique graden from which he drew inspiration for his beloved and masterful floral watercolors, or see the view that motivated Demuth to undertake his Precisionist works based on Lancaster buildings.

Demuth's legacy as a premier American modernist continues to expand, and the Demuth Museum likewise continues to augment its permanent collection of Charles Demuth works for the benefit of the 10,000 annual patrons who visit the museum from around the world. Located on the site of the artist's restored home and painting studio in historic downtown Lancaster for 25 years, the Demuth Museum also maintains a highly regarded exhibition schedule that showcases artists and works that present a Demuth connection in the areas of theme, technique and epoch. Demuth contemporaries Alfred H. Maurer (1868-1932) and Lyonnel Feininger (1871-1956) are notable subjects of two such recent exhibitions.

The Demuth Museum is also regarded as an education center for students and scholars, who can access the Museum's archives and library for research purposes. Off-site, our art education outreach program, Art in a Box, provides teachers with lesson plans and materials to introduce various aspects of Charles Demuth's work and life into their classrooms. The culmination of the program is an exhibition, each December, of the students' artwork based on the topic of the selected lesson.

This exhibition, as well as the Museum's other five annual exhibitions, are free and open to the public. Members of the Demuth Museum receive announcements for all exhibitions, as well as other exciting benefits that can be found on our website. Be sure to mark your calendar for our annual Demuth Garden Tour, every second weekend in June. Beginning in the Victorian garden at the Demuth Museum, from which Charles Demuth modeled many of his floral watercolors, explore the gardens of approximately 20 additional town and country gardens in one of the country's orginal garden tours.

Museum Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10AM to 4PM and Sundays 1 to 4PM. The museum is closed on Mondays, major holidays and the month of January.
