Interested in tracing your family history? Care to take in an informative exhibition on local history? Why not visit the Lancaster County Historical Society. Dedicated to both preservation and education, the library, archives and exhibitions offer countless opportunities to learn about Lancaster County history. Historian's Gift Shop & Bookstore carries books and fine gifts of historical interest. There are historical gifts and books for children, too.
The Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum is located on the grounds of the Lancaster County Historical Society and captures the beauty of each season. Louise Tanger, a local botanist and trustee of the historical society, undertook the planning and development of the grounds in 1956 when the original building was constructed. It is now maintained and developed by the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum. Sporting 104 varieties of mature trees, Tanger Arboretum is open to the public at no charge as a place of rest and relaxation. Its constantly changing form and texture provide an inviting spot to spend time enjoying the everlasting beauty of nature. Maps and tree labels allow visitors to take self-guided tours through the collection and a seated arbor recognizes donors who add memorial trees to the grounds. Group tours and a new Children's Tour of the Trees are also available. Call Felice Ethun (717) 392-4633 for details.
