Road Trips & Itineraries
Downtown Lancaster: 3-day sample itinerary

Day 1

Morning

Central Market: This is America's oldest farmers' market, continuously operated since the 1730's. The 1889 market building is a Victorian gem, so bring your camera. The tradition of market today is more like an international whirlwind of foods from here and around the world. Aisles are filled with a wonderful harvest of choices from old world and new, from Amish, German, Greek, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, and Slavic backgrounds making Lancaster's Central Market a gathering place so full of life you'll never forget the experience.

Afternoon

Shopping District: If a lazy stroll in search of an heirloom, being pampered in a chic boutique, or rearranging your SUV for that "got to have it" antique or work of art is your idea of nirvana you are in the right place.

Evening

First Fridays: Visit more than 25 downtown Lancaster shops and galleries that stay open late the first Friday of each month. Stroll through the eclectic shops selling everything from antiques to handmade jewelry. Meet local artists exhibiting in a number of galleries, and enjoy complimentary refreshments at many of the stops. Grab a drink or quick dinner at any of the downtown restaurants or coffee shops.

Overnight Lodging

Stay in this historic hotspot and find your home away from home in one of Lancaster's many warmly welcoming hotels, motelsB&Bs, and country inns. Great service and a good night sleep promises to refresh you for yet another day of exploring and adventure.

Day 2

Morning

Love Art? Lancaster City is home to more than 50 top-notch art-related destinations. From fine art galleries & studios, art & cultural museums, and interactive art venues, to performing art centers, antique art galleries, and even an art institution. Museums and galleries are sprinkled throughout the streets of this city that teems with culture, art and beauty.

Afternoon

If you've got an eye for stunning Colonial and Victorian architecture, a soul that searches for churches that resemble cathedrals, and you love to walk among cottage gardens and centuries-old city parks, America's largest historic district is perfect. There is more preserved historic architecture here than in most same-size cities.

Evening

Dinner: Fine dining in historic downtown Lancaster. Here in the City, the perfect dining experience is just a short stroll away! Your appetite for great food is easily satisfied in any of our cozy cafés, excellent brewpubs, and fine restaurants.

Top off your evening with a fabulous performance at the extraordinary Fulton Theatre. Built in 1852, this recently renovated Victorian beauty is the oldest continuously operating theatre in the country and is one of only three national historic landmark theatres in the country. Another great bet for a delightful evening of performing art is Franklin & Marshall College.

Day 3

Morning

Underground Railroad: Participate in the "Living the Experience" Underground Railroad Reenactment Bethel AME Church for an interactive journey back to the 1800's. During the reenactment, you will meet the conductors, Freedom Fighters, and others who participated in the Underground Railroad here in Lancaster and surrounding counties. Experience the anticipation of freedom, the joy of finding a welcoming home where you can rest for the night, and the fear prompted by the far-off sounds of dogs with their "catchers" drawing near. Individual ticket sales available for the Saturday afternoon show, or based on availability for weekday show schedules.
