Lancaster Overview
River Hills

Lancaster County's historic river towns of Columbia and Marietta hug the banks of the mighty Susquehanna River (the largest branch of the Chesapeake Bay), and welcome the beautiful waterway to be part of their activities and events. Outdoor options are a plenty, from fishing and boating on the river to biking and hiking in lush parks. Columbia and Marietta themselves house charming old-world architecture, quaint shops, restaurants and B&Bs. Just across the Susquehanna on its west banks is another river town of Wrightsville. Learn more about this area by visiting the Susquehanna Valley Visitors Center.

Columbia
Columbia once had the distinction of being known far and wide as "the gateway to the West." That was when Columbia was called Wright's Ferry and the ferryboat was the only means of transportation across the Susquehanna River. Today, Columbia offers its visitors homey, unique lodging, dining and attractions.

Marietta
In the Colonial days, Marietta was a Susquehanna River crossing known as Anderson's Ferry. The town prospered as a result of flourishing river commerce on the Pennsylvania Canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad. Marietta's early grandeur produced handsome Federal and Victoria homes, and much of the town has been declared a National Historic District. You'll enjoy its antique shops, charming bed and breakfasts and fine restaurants.

Wrightsville
Wrightsville, located on the western banks of the Susquehanna River in York County, is a river town rich in beauty and history. During the Civil War, it was a stop along the road for the Confederate Army, which was halted in Wrightsville due to the burning of the enclosed wooden bridge over the river. One of the oldest restored buildings in town is the Wrightsville House, which received the Best Historic Preservation Award from the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission in 1987. While in town, visit the John Wright Store & Restaurant, as well as Shank's Mare Outfitters, offering river activities, tours and rentals.
