Immerse yourself in our history & heritage

One of the best ways to learn about heritage in Pennsylvania Dutch Country is to immerse yourself in the stories and places where ordinary people with extraordinary determination changed our nation’s history.?

Morning

For a unique breakfast experience, stop at the Café located in Ten Thousand Villages, a store that promotes fair wages for handcrafted items by skilled artisans from 30 countries. You can have Fair trade espresso, coffees, teas and other specialty drinks along with quiches, wraps and delicious pastries. After breakfast, take a look around the store. You’ll be astonished by what you see.

Head down the road to the Ephrata Cloister, one of America's earliest communal societies, best known for its original art and music and distinctive medieval Germanic architecture. It’s a national historic landmark founded in 1732.

Afternoon

Take a lovely drive to Hometown Kitchen where Pennsylvania Dutch dishes are made by Amish cooks. Watch the cooks while they prepare your meal and converse with them as they serve you.

Stop at the Christiana Underground Railroad Center at Historic Zercher’s Hotel, and take a self-guided tour of the museum that provides fascinating evidence of the resistance and bibliographies of the persons and locations of the Underground Railroad Stations. Visit the Robert Fulton Birthplace, the early home of Robert Fulton, a pioneer steamship builder, artist, inventor and engineer. In 1965, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has restored and furnished the house to represent its appearance during Fulton's lifetime. A portion of the house contains exhibits chronicling Fulton's life and accomplishments.

Evening

Sit down and relax during dinner. The Iron Horse Inn, originally a hotel, a stage coach stop, and a wagon stop, has been serving food and drink for over 100 years. Enjoy dinner in a historic building (if only walls could talk). Or head to the Fireside Tavern for dinner in a cozy, comfortable bar and dining area located at the Historic Strasburg Inn.

It’s time to turn in for the night. Not far is Mussers' Historic Country Suites is a charming converted general store that offers the privacy of a guest house with the amenities of a bed and breakfast.
